TIMELINE to TIMEFRAME
「TIMELINE」is a collaboration that takes the form of a participatory performance where we invite participants to leave their individual marks on an ever-moving line of string that connects them.
description of action. let X = art naming 奇能, let Y = Yipeng Lee:
1.X pours black calligraphy ink into the sponge on 6 wooden stands
2.X pulls a line of white string clockwise from Y through the 6 wooden stands, inviting the participants to use ink to leave marks on the line
3.X is in the middle of the circle, slowly pulling the line into a ball and submerging them in ink. Y releases the line from outside the circle
4.this action continues until all the line is pulled by X and submerged in ink to become fully black
5.then, X brings the 6 wooden stands into the middle of the circle and uses the now black line to tie them together
6.X walks “backwards” anti-clockwise of the circle, then binds all the black line onto the wooden stands, culminating in an object that serves to document and remember the experience
we hope this experience can guide the participants to reflect on their own relationship with time. just like the ever-moving line on the wooden stands in front of them, we cannot prevent the slipping away of time. participants can use the ink and attempt to leave their individual marks on the line, but such evidence will eventually be submerged in black ink, remaining unseen. the audience might start to consider: if we can prophesy the ending, will we take the same path?
after 「TIMELINE」, we transform the remaining object that contains memory into 「TIMEFRAME」, a literal frame that requires two parts joined together to form. time and memory is fluid: even if their material (or what happened) is essentially the same, their form can transform.
